In 2016, Olivia Valentine and I were asked to propose a surface for the construction fence of a new building in downtown Des Moines. We developed collages articulating a proposal for the surface to be a drawing “under construction,” developed through contentious graphic dialogues over the course of the construction of the building.
As it became clear that the length of the fence was to be much longer than the two of us alone could address over such a time span, we invited the Des Moines-based artist, Rob Stevens to join us in collaboration, to develop the project through a community-based design process. Our final proposal was to develop the fence surface as an ever-changing mural incorporating drawings and stories from our local communities. The proposal included a detailed plan to generate and curate this material through community workshops. At that point, the project was put on hold indefinitely, and is unrealized.
